From the many sights of glorious Cape Town, the serene beauty of the Namibian desert, the grandeur of the Fish River canyon, amazing Sossusvlei, historic Swakopmund, the wildlife splendour of the Etosha Pan, world famous Okavango Delta and Chobe, and the amazing Victoria Falls, this tour combines Africa’s best with the flexibility of an (optionally guided) private self drive tour, staying in unpretentious, but still proper Hotels, Lodges, or Chalets.

Designed to suit small private groups of 2 to 8 participants, this already popular 5 country African exploration offers the most extravagant splendour of diverse scenery, wildlife and cultural experiences imaginable. (Note that although some considerable distances are covered on some days, it is mostly on good open roads, where an average of 110 to 120 kms per hour can comfortably be achieved, not counting stops. An easy rest day mostly also follows such a long single day drive)
DAY 1 CAPE TOWN Arrive in Cape Town, collect hired car, do an optional Peninsular tour to the famous Cape of Storms, or enjoy some of the many other attractions of this beautiful city. Overnight at the Cape Gardens or Cape Manor Hotel. BnB
DAY 2 CAPE TOWN All day at leisure to explore more sights of this magnificent city, including Table Mountain (weather permitting), followed by a waterfront evening. Overnight in the Cape Gardens or Cape Manor Hotel. BnB
DAY 3 LAMBERTS BAY (approx 300 kms)
After an early breakfast depart Cape Town, travelling up through the West Coast en route to Lamberts Bay. If not averse to some dirt roads., optionally detour to stop en route at Saldanha harbour and the tranquil fishing towns of Paternoster and St Helena bay. If lucky in early spring, a magnificent natural floral display can also be enjoyed this area. Late afternoon visit to Lamberts bay’s Bird Island famous for its Gannet colony. Overnight at the Lamberts Bay Hotel or similar. BnB Pre-book your dinner at the famous "Muisbosskerm" outdoor beach seafood restaurant!
DAY 4 OKIEP/SPRINGBOK (approx 420 kms)Early start departing by 7h30 to continue north for a long drive along the N7 on to Okiep for overnight at the Okiep Country Inn BnB. En route the "heerenlodgement cave" may be of interest to historians of early Cape travellers, including goveneor Simon van der Stel who overnighted in this cave.
Day 5 FISH RIVER CANYON (approx 350 kms)Early start departing by 8h00 to continue north for a relatively quick drive along the N7 on to the Orange River crossing into Namibia and then on to the Fish River Canyon in the afternoon. You either stay at Ai-Ais or the Canon Roadhouse. BnB
OPTION: add a day to hike the canyon!
DAY 6 MALTAHOE (approx. 590 kms good tar roads)
You continuing on the tar road north until just before Marienthal, where we turn off towards Maltahoehe for your overnight stop. BnB at Daweb Guest House. OPTION: if time is available an optional interesting 2/3 day detour could be made to Luderitz on the coast. This is a return trip of approximately 720 kms (ie 360 one way) Day 7 & 8 SESRIEM/SOSSUSVLEI (approx 150 kms dirt road)We take the dusty dirt road to Sesriem. Visit the Sesriem Canyon before driving on to your overnight for 2 nights at the Weltevreden Guestfarm or similar. Time to relax. The next morning an early wake up call for the magnificent sunrise over the Sossusvlei dunes – afternoon to relax. DAY 9 &10 SWAKOPMUND (approx 330km)
Continue through the impressive Namib Naukluft Desert Park to the coastal harbour town of Walvis Bay for lunch. In the afternoon then continue to Swakopmund - a quaint throwback to the German colonial era, and Namibia’s main coastal resort on the cold Atlantic ocean. Interesting architecture, salt plastered roads, unusual shops and great hospitality make this interesting town a great break on your trip. Overnight at the Beach Lodge or similar. BnB. Next day at leisure exploring Swakopmund, again staying at the Lodge.
DAY 11 KHORIXAS ( approx 350 km)Travel north initially along the coast via Heintjies Bay, Twyfelfontein and the stop at the Petrified Forest before continuing to Khorixas where we overnight in the Khorixas Rest Camp or Twyfelfontein Lodge. Bed only DAY 12 & 13 ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK (approx. 250 km)
Continue today to arrive at the Etosha National Park famed for its unique salt pan scenery and plentiful game along waterholes where the big 5 can be spotted. The floodlit waterhole at Okaukeujo Camp also provides an excellent opportunity for evening game viewing. Overnight either two nights in the Etosha chalets at Okaukeujo or Namutoni, (an old German colonial fort), or one at each. Bed only. On day 12 all day opportunity to enjoy a game spotting safari in ones own vehicle.
DAY 14 WINDHOEK (approx 450 kms)Depart Etosha early and travel south to Windhoek, stopping en route at Okahandja to view the local African crafts. Evening at leisure to enjoy the city life of Windhoek, such as the famed Joes’s Beer Garden, who also prepares an outstanding meal. Overnight at either the Garni Entambeni or Safari Hotel or simillar BnB DAY 15 END OF PART ONE OF TOUR Spend the morning at leisure viewing Windhoek before returning to the airport to catch a connecting flight home. ( N.B. Airticket is excluded). ALTERNATIVELY continue: DAY 15 WINDHOEK to BOTSWANA (approx 300km)Depart late morning after a last look at Windhoek and travel to the border town of Buitepos. Approximately 30km before, turn off to Zelda Guest Farm for your overnight on this game reserve with some impresseive game and interesting bushmen culture! DBnB
NOTE: It is possible to continue to Johannesburg from here. On Day 14 you would travel from Windhoek, towards Buitepos along the B6. Continue along through the border ( approx 500 kms) and overnight at Kalahari Arms in Ghantzi BnB. On Day 15 drive south along the Trans Kalahari route (A2 right through Botswana) to cross the border to South Africa at Lobatse arriving Zeerust near Sun City for example late that afternoon (approx. 670km). Overnight Abjaterskop Hotel BnB. Leave for Sun City the next morning, and then continue to Johannesburg in the afternoonof the next day. (DAY 16 – approx 300 kms)DAY 16 Botswana border to MAUN (approx 530 kms on good roads)After clearing customs enter Botswana for the long drive through the Kalahari semi desert to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Overnight at Croc Camp chalets or similar. BnB
DAY 17 and 18 OKAVANGO DELTA (20 min flight)You fly by light aircraft into the world famous Okavango Delta for a 2 day/2 night wilderness excursion at either Semetsi or Oddballs tented safari camp. Spend time appreciating the wild beauty of this swampy wilderness, also taking part in various activities which may include mokoro trips, game walks etc. Overnight in tented safari camp with all meals, evenings around the fireside. DAY 19 NATA (approx 350 kms)In the morning of day 18, we fly back to Maun and depart for the drive to Nata and the Makgadikgadi Pans, also good for game viewing. Overnight at Nata Lodge, BnB
DAY 20 CHOBE RIVER (approx 350 kms)After breakfast depart for Kasane and the Chobe River, watching for game and particularly Elephant that frequently cross the main road here. Arrive in time for the 3h30 pm sunset cruise through this wildlife paradise, a once in a lifetime experience. Overnight on the banks of the Chobe River at the Chobe Safari Lodge or simillar in chalets. BnB
OPTION: From Chobe it is recommended you take a 2 day camping/lodge safari into impressive CHOBE NATIONAL PARK as an add on option. All inclusive of 4x4 transport, equipment, all meals, guides and open vehicle safaris, this provides an outstanding wildlife experience. Individual quotes on request. DAY 21 VIC FALLS (approx 90kms)
After an early morning game drive in the famous Chobe National Park, followed by brunch, we cross the border to Zimbabwe and continue for a short drive to famous Victoria Falls. Spend the afternoon exploring the majestic rain forest surrounding the falls, and then either cross into Zambia via the famous arched bridge over the gorge to overnight at the Waterfront Chalets or similar on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, or alternatively stay in Vic Falls at the Sprayview Hotel. BnB DAY 22 VIC FALLS (end of tour)After breakfast and a last look around, end your tour by dropping off the car at airport and fly back to connect to your international flight ( N.B. Airticket is excluded). Various other options like driving back to Johannesburg via the Zimbabwe ruins – or driving to Kariba and harare via Zambia do exist and will be arranged on special request.
