2003 CAPE GARDEN ROUTE & KAROO TOUR

A 15 day SELF DRIVE or GROUP TOUR including the beautiful "mother city", Cape Town, at the foot of the majestic Table Mountain, the spectacular Cape of Good Hope, the picturesque Winelands, the fascinating Little Karoo with its varied landscape along the famous Route 62, as well as the arid and vast Great Karoo, the malaria free Addo Elephant Park, the "friendly city" of Port Elizabeth, the lovely Garden Route, and the whale watching town of Hermanus.

 

DAY 1 CAPE TOWN

You arrive at the Fairest Cape of them all and collect your car at Cape Town International Airport. In the afternoon you could go sightseeing in Cape Town, with its uniquely beautiful setting at the foot of the 1 000m high Table Mountain. If the weather is agreeable, you could take the cable car up the mountain.

DAY 2 CAPE PENINSULA

Today you drive to the Cape of Good Hope, via Simon’s Town, where you could visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach. You return via Ou Kaapse Weg, Hout Bay and the scenic road along the Atlantic coast. If there is time, you could also visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and Groot Constantia, one of South Africa’s oldest wine estates.

DAY 3 CAPE TOWN

Another day in the fascinating city of Cape Town to do all the things you were not able to fit in on the previous two days, such as Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, the South African Museum, St George’s Cathedral, the Castle of Good Hope – the oldest building of European origin in South Africa etc., etc.

DAY 4 CAPE TOWN - MONTAGU

Your journey continues via the historic old town of Paarl, with its striking Afrikaans language Monument and the Du Toit’s Kloof Pass. From view points along Du Toit’s Kloof Pass, you have a vast panorama with the whole Cape Peninsula all the way to the Table Mountain Massif at your feet. You continue via Worcester and Robertson to Montagu. Just before you come to Montagu, you will pass through the Cogman's Kloof Gorge with its many layers of rock through a short tunnel, above which an old British fort dating

from the time of the Boer War, can be seen.

DAY 5 MONTAGU – OUDTSHOORN

Today’s journey takes you along the along the ruggedly beautiful Route 62 to Oudtshoorn, in the vicinity of which you could visit the world famous Cango Caves as well as an ostrich farm.

DAY 6 OUDTSHOORN

There is much to see today. Apart from the Cango Caves and an ostrich farm, there is also the Cango Wildlife Ranch, where, if you are lucky, you might be able to hug a cheetah. You could also do a round trip (±171km) over the spectacular Swartberg Pass with its weirdly twisted rock formations, travelling as far as Prince Albert, and then returning via Klaarstroom and the impressive Meiringspoort Gorge to Oudtshoorn.

DAY 7 OUDTSHOORN - CRADOCK

Today’s journey takes you to Cradock via the historic old frontier town of Graaff Reinet with its fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. A detour to the Valley of Desolation view site near Graaff Reinet would be well worth your while. In Cradock you will be staying in one of a whole row of beautifully restored old colonial houses.

DAY 8 CRADOCK – ADDO AREA

From Cradock you travel to the Addo area, where you will overnight in a country inn on the old stage coach road between Cradock and Port Elizabeth.

DAY 9 ADDO ELEPHANT PARK

You have the whole day to look for the gentle giants of the Addo Elephant Park. The unique Addo elephants, which are smaller than other African elephants also have smaller teeth (the females have no teeth at all). Apart from the elephants there are also antelope and Cape buffalo in the park.

DAY 10 ZUURBERG – PORT ELIZABETH

Today you have an easy run down to the sometimes windy but always friendly city of Port Elizabeth, where you could enjoy one of the fine beaches. You could also visit the interesting marine exhibits at Port Elizabeth’s Bay World. You overnight at Summerstrand on the edge of the city.

DAY 11 PORT ELIZABETH - KNYSNA

Today you travel along the most scenic part of the famous Garden Route over the Bloukrans and Grootrivier Passes along the R102 through thick primeval forest with centuries old forest giants, to Knysna, the "Heart" of the Garden Route, where you overnight. On the way you will pass over the spectacular Paul Sauer Bridge over the Storms River Gorge.

DAY 12 KNYSNA – MOSSEL BAY

Today you have the opportunity to explore Knysna and the Garden Route further. You could go for a ride on the historic Outeniqua Choo Choo steam train, that runs between Knysna and George. Alternatively you could go on a boat cruise on the picturesque Knysna Lagoon, or you could go on one of the many scenic drives or hikes in the area. On your way to Mossel Bay you will pass through the lovely Lake District between Knysna and Wilderness.

DAY 13 MOSSEL BAY – HERMANUS

Today you travel through rolling countryside to the whale watching town of Hermanus, where there are some of the best whale sightings in the world during the second half of the year. Your hotel is right on the beach, so that you can look out for these massive marine creatures from your sea-facing room.

DAY 14 HERMANUS – STELLENBOSCH

From Hermanus you travel along the spectacularly beautiful coastal road above False Bay via Kleinmond and Gordon’s Bay, and on to the historic old town of Stellenbosch, where many old Cape Dutch buildings have been preserved.

DAY 15 STELLENBOSCH - AIRPORT

Depending on when your flight departs (It is an easy run from Stellenbosch to the airport), you still have time this morning to wander along the historic Dorp Street in Stellenbosch, doing some last minute shopping in quaint old shops like Oom Samie se Winkel.
