2003 SOUTH AFRICAN HIGHLIGHTS TOUR

A 22 day SELF DRIVE or GROUP TOUR including, Pretoria, the Mpumalanga Panorama route, two nights all inclusive in a private game lodge at the Kruger National Park, the Kingdom of Swaziland, the Kingdom of the Zulu, the world heritage site of St Lucia and adjoining game reserves, the magnificent Drakensberg, the subtropical coastal resort city of Durban, the scenic Garden Route, arid Karoo, famous wine route and world renowned Cape Town with its plentiful attractions!

DAY 1 JOHANNESBURG

You arrive at Johannesburg International Airport in the morning. Your rented car is waiting for you at the airport, and you drive to your first hotel. In the afternoon visit South Africa's capital, Pretoria. You spend your first night in one of the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.

DAY 2 SABIE

Today you travel east across the Highveld to the scenic Mpumalanga (the place where the sun rises). You spend the night in Sabie. If you still have the energy you could visit one of the many waterfalls in the area.

DAY 3 GAME LODGE – KRUGER PARK

Today your programme includes the old gold mining town of Pilgrim's Rest, and the Blyde River Canyon, including God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes. You spend the night in a private game lodge bordering on the Kruger National Park, and go on a late afternoon game drive in an open vehicle at the game lodge. (N.B. For this area malaria precautions are recommended)

DAY 4 GAME LODGE – KRUGER PARK

In the early morning you go on a guided bush hike. After breakfast you could visit a lion breeding project (at extra cost), or you can simply relax in the solitude of the African bush. A light lunch is provided at the game lodge. If you decide to stay away for most of the day, you could make arrangements with the game lodge for a picnic lunch. In the afternoon there is another game drive at the game lodge, and if the weather plays along, an evening "braai" (barbecue) under the African sky.

DAY 5 HAZYVIEW

Today you travel through the world famous Kruger National Park in your own vehicle (rented car), where, if you are lucky, you could see Africa's "big five" (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard). Do make an early start in order to see as much as possible.

DAY 6 KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND

Today you travel to the Kingdom of Swaziland with its many craft markets on the side of the road, where you can buy authentic African souvenirs. You stay south just of Mbabane.

DAY 7 HLUHLUWE

Your destination today is northern KwaZulu-Natal, the historic home of the proud warrior nation of the Zulus. If you arrive early enough, you could take an open-vehicle drive to the Mkuzi Game Reserve or Lake St Lucia (at extra cost). HLUHLUWE INN HOTEL DBB (T-CLASS) &

DAY 8 ZINKWAZI

 

After an early breakfast you can learn something about Zulu culture in the traditional Zulu village Dumazulu, and thereafter you go for a drive through the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, where the "big five" can also be seen. From here the journey continues to Zinkwazi on the coast, where you could enjoy the warm Indian Ocean even in winter. ZINKWAZI LODGE BB

DAY 9 DRAKENSBERG

Today you travel via Greytown and/or the Howick Waterfall through the green hills (green by African standards) of KwaZulu-Natal. Your destination is the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the jagged peaks of which reminded the pioneers of a dragon's back. Here you spend the night in the Central Berg. DAY 10 DURBAN

In the morning you can go on a short hike in the lovely, refreshing mountain air. After lunch, you

travel to the multicultural city of Durban, with Africa's biggest port. Durban has a large Indian population, which gives it a strong Asiatic atmosphere. Here there would also be the opportunity to do some shopping. THE BEACH HOTEL BB (T-CLASS) &

DAY 11 SOUTH COAST

Today you drive along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal to Southbroom or Port Edward, where you will spend the night. On the way you could make a detour to the lovely, forested Oribi Gorge near Port Shepstone, or if you would prefer to try your luck, you could also travel to the Wild Coast Casino just a little further south. DAY 12 EAST LONDON

Today you travel through the former Transkei, with its pretty African huts and typically African landscape. Overnight in East London. PROTEA HOTEL KING DAVID BB (T-CLASS) &

DAY 13 ADDO ELEPHANT PARK

Today you travel to the Addo Elephant Park, where you could see the unique Addo elephants, which are smaller than other African elephants, and also have smaller tusks (the females have no tusks). You overnight at Zuurberg near Addo. ZUURBERG MOUNTAIN INN BB (T-CLASS) &

DAY 14 PORT ELIZABETH

Today the friendly, but windy harbour city of Port Elizabeth is on your programme. You spend the night in Port Elizabeth where the Indian Ocean beckons, inviting you to have a swim. And if you do not feel like a swim, you could go for a walk along the beach, enjoying the refreshing sea air.

DAY 15 KNYSNA

Today you travel along the world famous Garden Route - a natural paradise in the true sense of the word! Enjoy the primeval forest of the Tsitsikamma National Park, with its centuries old forest giants, deep ravines, rivers and a wide variety of birds. ASHMEAD RESORT KNYSNA BB (T-CLASS) &

DAY 16 OUDTSHOORN

Today you travel over the Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn. In this area you can visit the Cango Caves as well as an ostrich farm.

DAY 17 HERMANUS

Today you travel to Hermanus, where the sea is well known for whale sightings during the second half or the year, and if you are lucky, you might see one or more of these ocean giants.

DAY 18 GORDON’S BAY OR STELLENBOSCH

From Hermanus you travel along the beautiful coastal road via Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay to either Gordon’s Bay or Stellenbosch, where you overnight.

DAY 19 CAPE TOWN

Today your journey passes through the vineyards of the Cape, with its many old wine estates, some of which you could visit. On the way you will pass through the old (old by South African standards) towns of Stellenbosch or Paarl, where you can see fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. You will spend the night in Cape Town.

DAY 20 CAPE TOWN

Today you travel to the Cape of Good Hope (also known as Cape Point), where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. From there the sight seeing trip continues via Ou Kaapse Weg and Constantia to Hout Bay, and along the Atlantic coast to Cape Town. You again spend the night in Cape Town, where you could have dinner at one of the many restaurants at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

DAY 21 CAPE TOWN

Today you visit central Cape Town, with its uniquely beautiful setting at the foot of Table Mountain. You can visit the Victoria and Albert Waterfront on the old harbour basin, where you can buy your last gifts to take along for family and friends at home. The Cape of Good Hope Castle, the oldest building of European origin in South Africa, and the South African Museum, as well as the Houses of Parliament and the old Gardens of the Dutch East India Company should be included in your programme. And if the weather permits, a trip up Table Mountain in the cable car would be an unforgettable experience.

DAY 22 DEPART

As most flights depart in the afternoon, you could still spend the morning doing some of the things you were not able to do on the previous days, such as visiting the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Around midday you return your rented car to the airport and prepare for your flight home.
